About the UKPDS Outcomes Model

The UKPDS Outcomes Model is a computer simulation model based on patient-level data collected as part of the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, which has been extended to include 30 years of follow-up data.

Designed to predict clinical events, life expectancy, costs and quality of life over a lifetime for populations with type 2 diabetes, based on a wide variety of input data, including knowledge of previous clinical events for individuals, and can take into account changes in risk factor levels over time.

The software can facilitate economic evaluations by estimating changes in outcomes such as life expectancy and quality adjusted life expectancy, and costs for each member of a given population when risk factors such as blood glucose level, blood pressure, lipid levels and smoking status are changed.

The model has been implemented widely around the globe: UKPDS global users

Key Features

The newly launched version 2.1 includes greater usability and extended features including:
  • Comparison of up to 25 treatment groups simultaneously
  • New outputs showing convergence, and costs and disutilities split by event
  • Generation of outputs for up to five user defined composite outcomes
  • Major speed improvements. Up to 124 processors can now be utilised
  • Disabling selected output sheets to increase speed
  • Disk space optimisation for larger datasets

Uses of the Outcomes Model

Applications include:
  • Population-based health economic analyses
  • Health service planning
  • Estimating life expectancy and health events for improving accuracy of insurance and actuary models.
  • Calculating expected event rates for sample size calculations in clinical trial design.

Additional Information

The UKPDS Outcomes Model has been used in a range of research, clinical and commercial applications worldwide, as well as by NICE, and can operate on Windows and Mac OS X platforms. It uses Microsoft Excel workbooks to store input and output data which can be queued for processing in turn by the OM2 Controller Application which runs the model.

Published papers, conference abstracts and more information about the UKPDS Outcomes Model is available on the Diabetes Trial Unit website.

The model is available as a standalone desktop application for Windows or Mac, and the download also includes a user manual.

A short term development license is also available to allow for evaluation of the software. Pricing for this will be dependent on the potential long term use of the software alongside the term of the license which can be up to 4 weeks. Please get in touch in this could be of interest.
